Dont... you will devalue the rifle by at least 30% ....Your M55 is a fairly rare Winchester (about 21,000 units) and is probably worth at least $900 or more.
On the tang...see the two screws... they will take an appropriate Marbles or Lyman tang sight--- that will not devalue the rifle
Find a AE model 94 or Marlin 336 if you really want to screw up the nimble handling levergun with a big scope. There are a bunch of 94's around that have already been drilled and tapped for the ugly side mounted scope hardware. Find one of those if you insist.
