Optics question?
When taking a picture on a sunny day, you can use a very small opening in the diaphragm and the picture comes out sharp, but in a dull day you have to use a larger opening and the picture is not so sharp. Why is this?

Well when there is more light available, you don't need as big an opening in the diaphragm to collect as much light. When there is less light available, a larger opening is necessary to collect the same amount of light. This concept is demonstrated best by our pupils! Close your eyes, keep them closed, then look at them in a mirror! Also, try watching a friend's pupil while you shine a light into it!
The problem with sharpness, though, is that with a smaller hole, focus is better. You can illustrate this by poking a very small hole in a piece of paper with the tip of a very sharp pencil, and looking though the hole. If you have 20/20 vision, it will be harder to notice, but if one has myopia, (short-sightedness) it is easy to tell the difference. This is why we sometimes squint.
